Toiletry travel bag – Guccio Gucci – 1930´s – Silver – Axel Jonsson
A beautiful toiletry travel bag designed by Guccio Gucci in Italy in the 1930´s. The bag is made of Peccary leather and all pieces inside are made of sterling silver. It contains 2 brushes, 3 boxes with lids, 1 case for a toothbrush and two bottles; one for perfume and one for talcum-powder. All pieces are stamped Gucci 925 except for two bottles on which I can’t find any markings. All pieces are golden-plated on the inside and of the highest quality. All silver pieces are in very good condition except for some dirt. One of the bottles has dents on the bottom and some scratches on the side. The weight of the silver objects are 1,19 kilograms.
The bag shows some usage wear, especially on the outside corners. It´s in very good condition on the inside except for a perfume stain in the pocket for the perfume bottle. It also contains two smaller original leather cases that you can see in the second picture. The bag measures 32,5 x 23 cm (13″ x 9,2″) on the outside. This is a unique bag that was made-to-order for Axel Jonsson, who’s name is engraved over the handle.
This bag has a wonderful provenance. Axel Jonsson ordered this bag from Guccio Gucci and he owned it his entire life. After his death in 1950 it stayed with his family who later on sold it. Axel Jonsson was born in 1888 in Gothenburg and in 1929 he became the CEO for the Swedish American Line, one of the largest companies in Sweden who operated a liner service between Gothenburg and New York. Axel Jonsson worked for S.A.L for almost two decades, he was also the consul and later on the consul-general for Italy in Gothenburg in the 1930´s and 1940´s.
